Rain Set to Keep Kolkata Cooler Through the Weekend Following Gusty Friday Storm
Kolkata is poised for a spell of relatively pleasant weather over the coming week as enhanced thunderstorm activity across South Bengal keeps intense summer temperatures in check. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore, the shift is driven by a cyclonic circulation over east Uttar Pradesh combined with a strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal. For Friday, June 5, the city is expected to remain under a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms developing toward the evening or night, following an initial 22.6mm of rainfall recorded earlier in the day. This recurring cloud cover and moisture-laden wind pattern are expected to prevent a return of severe heat, with Friday’s maximum and minimum temperatures projected to settle comfortably around 32°C and 25°C, respectively.
The cooling trend will persist through the weekend and into next week, bringing frequent chances of intermittent rain to the metropolitan area. Temperatures on Saturday, June 6, are forecast to hover between 31°C and 25°C, while Sunday and Monday are both expected to see a maximum of 32°C and a minimum of 26°C. While the mercury may edge up slightly by Tuesday and Wednesday to around 33°C, overall conditions will remain significantly milder than earlier in the week. Beyond the city line, the weather office has issued warnings for more severe thunderstorm activity, predicting lightning and squally winds reaching speeds of 40-60kmph across several South Bengal districts on Friday, with localized heavy rain expected to hit parts of Nadia and East Burdwan. Due to the active lightning threat, meteorologists have advised residents to stay indoors during storms and avoid seeking shelter under trees or vulnerable structures.
