The Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata has extended the suspension of academic activities until December 11, 2026, amid an ongoing student boycott over alleged attacks on campus. The decision was announced on Thursday through an order issued by the institute’s registrar, Deepak Kumar.
The institute had previously suspended classes until November 13 and instructed students staying in hostels and other campus premises to vacate within 24 hours. The latest order extends the restrictions, citing concerns over campus security, discipline and normal functioning.
Academic activities in both the film and Electronic and Digital Media (EDM) wings will remain suspended. Hostel mess services will also stay closed until December 11. The administration has warned that violations of official instructions could invite disciplinary or legal action.
The student boycott began on September 28, following alleged assaults on students the previous day. Another incident reportedly occurred on October 4, when supporters of the Hindu Jagran Manch allegedly attempted to enter the campus.
Students have accused the administration of targeting protesters instead of taking action against those allegedly involved in the attacks. Their demands include the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Santosh Ajmera.
Meanwhile, the students’ union alleged that two contractual teachers were terminated and five resource persons lost their positions for supporting the movement. However, an institute official maintained that these decisions followed due deliberation.
