Kolkata Police have issued a significant prohibitory order under Section 144 of the CrPC, covering the city’s Central Business District for 60 days starting May 3, 2026. The order specifically targets areas around Dalhousie Square, including the vicinity of the State Secretariat (Nabanna) and other high-security administrative zones. Under this directive, any gathering of five or more people, as well as the carrying of sticks, weapons, or any objects that could be used to incite violence, is strictly prohibited.

The timing of this order is particularly notable as it coincides with the final stages of the West Bengal Assembly elections and the scheduled counting of votes on May 4. Authorities have stated that these preventive measures are necessary to maintain public tranquility and prevent any potential unrest or unauthorized demonstrations during the sensitive post-poll period. This 60-day restriction highlights the administration’s commitment to ensuring a stable environment in the heart of the city as the state awaits its electoral mandate.
