Regal Heritage Prosenjit Chatterjee’s Padma Shri Look Pays Tribute to Bengal’s Theatre History
Bengali cinema icon Prosenjit Chatterjee received the prestigious Padma Shri award from President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in a custom attire that beautifully celebrated Bengal’s cultural legacy. Designed by Kolkata-based couturier Abhisek Roy of the fashion label Roy Calcutta, the actor’s ivory dhuti-panjabi (dhoti-kurta) ensemble drew direct inspiration from the architectural grandeur of old Calcutta theatres. Crafted from rich Muga tussar silk, the outfit featured intricate antique gold hand-embroidery around the neckline, yoke, and cuffs, mimicking classic theatre interiors, iconic balcony arches, stage curtains, and vintage projector beams. Roy explained that the veteran star wanted a quintessential Bengali look that was simple, elegant, and deeply rooted in tradition, capturing the nostalgic spirit of both the stage and classic cinema.
The recognition marks a historic milestone for the 63-year-old actor, fondly known as “Mr. Industry” or “Bumbada,” celebrating a career that spans over four decades and more than 300 films. Prosenjit traveled to New Delhi accompanied by his son, Trishanjit Chatterjee, expressing immense emotional pride in bringing this national honor home to the Bengali film fraternity. Having successfully transitioned from a commercial romantic idol of the 1980s into an acclaimed powerhouse of parallel cinema, his contribution was honored alongside other major cultural figures like Mammootty and R. Madhavan at the Civil Investiture Ceremony.
