Despite an intense 10-day crackdown resulting in over 43,000 cases of illegal parking and helmetless driving, Kolkata Traffic Police found that public compliance remains low. Data analyzed by Lalbazar traffic headquarters revealed a frustrating trend: the number of traffic violations actually spiked significantly between the eighth and tenth days of the drive compared to its start. For instance, the South Traffic Guard logged a steep jump from 60 illegal parking cases on May 9 to a massive 993 cases on Saturday, May 16, a day when local offices are shut. Similarly, helmetless riding cases surged over the weekend in areas like Jorabagan, proving that motorists are letting their guard down once regular peak hours conclude.

In response to these findings, Police Commissioner Ajay Nand has ordered a sustained, strategic shift in enforcement tactics. Moving forward, the police will focus intensely on weekends, neighborhood bylanes, and night drives after 8:00 PM, when infractions are hitting their peak. The primary enforcement net will target major commercial zones like the Central Business District (CBD), Burrabazar-Posta, and Camac Street-Minto Park, following state directives to completely eradicate illegal parking. Furthermore, the crackdown will expand into added areas along the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and Diamond Harbour Road, with officers instructedto actively clear out illegal open-air commercial garages and unauthorized truck parking.
