A fielding lapse from Chennai Super Kings handed Shubman Gill a crucial reprieve early on, and the Gujarat Titans captain made CSK pay as he and Sai Sudharsan gave their side a commanding start in the IPL 2026 fixture at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday.

After being sent in to bat by CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who won the toss and chose to field, the GT opening pair took control of the powerplay and beyond. Both Gill and Sudharsan brought up well-constructed half-centuries, laying a strong foundation for Gujarat Titans in what is a must-win game for Chennai.

The early phase of the innings saw drama for CSK behind the stumps. Wicketkeeper Sanju Samson sustained a finger injury while keeping in just the second over of the match and was forced to leave the field for treatment. Youngster Urvil Patel took over the gloves for the remainder of the innings for Chennai.

Gill’s knock also marked a personal milestone. During his innings, the GT captain went past 6000 runs in T20 cricket, underlining his consistency in the format. CSK’s decision to bowl first, aimed at exploiting early pace and bounce, was undone when they failed to hold on to a chance offered by Gill. The dropped catch proved expensive as the opener settled in and stitched together a dominant stand with Sudharsan.

With Gujarat Titans already through to the playoffs, they are looking to maintain momentum heading into the knockouts. For CSK, the dropped chance and GT’s fluent start have left them chasing the game in their final group-stage outing of IPL 2026.
