Gaikwad Axes Rs 14.20-Crore Signing as CSK Elects to Bowl in Do-or-Die IPL 2026 Clash Against GT
Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad called correctly at the toss and chose to chase against Gujarat Titans in their final IPL 2026 group-stage fixture at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday. With CSK’s playoff hopes hanging by a thread, Gaikwad rang in two significant changes to the playing XI for the must-win encounter.
Speaking after winning the toss, Gaikwad explained that the decision to bowl first was driven by the surface. The pitch was offering early pace and bounce, and the CSK captain wanted his bowlers to capitalize on those conditions upfront. As part of the tactical shuffle, left-arm seamer Gurjapneet Singh was handed a spot in place of West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein. The second change saw overseas batter Matthew Short come in for Prashant Veer.
Veer’s omission raised eyebrows given his price tag. The young Indian was snapped up by Chennai for a massive Rs 14.20 crore at the IPL 2026 auction, but has been benched for the team’s most crucial game of the season. Gaikwad noted the changes were purely conditions-based, adding that Hosein unfortunately missed out due to the team combination.
Addressing how CSK prepared for the high-stakes game, Gaikwad stressed simplicity and process. He admitted the team fought hard in their previous outing without getting the desired result, but the focus was on showing up and securing the win. He said the team wanted to avoid overcomplicating things and instead keep their approach straightforward on the day.
On the other side, Gujarat Titans had less pressure. Shubman Gill’s side had already sealed a playoff berth before this match. Gill revealed he too would have opted to bowl first, citing minimal dew expected later in the evening. GT made a single adjustment to their XI, with pacer Prasidh Krishna replacing left-arm spinner Sai Kishore.
Gill emphasized that the job was far from over despite qualification. He called for maintained intensity with the ball and expressed hope for three strong performances going forward as the Titans eye the title.
