Helmetless Biker Arrested for Draging Police Sergeant in Desperate Escape Attempt
A routine traffic enforcement drive in Kolkata turned violent on Monday night when a helmetless motorcyclist assaulted and dragged an on-duty police sergeant in an attempt to evade a checkpoint. The incident occurred at the busy intersection of Alipore Road and Chetla Central Road during a targeted crackdown on traffic violators conducted by the Chetla Police Station. When the police sergeant from the Tollygunge traffic guard spotted the rider and signaled him to pull over, the motorist deliberately accelerated instead of slowing down, striking the officer and dragging him a short distance along the road.
Other police personnel positioned at the checkpoint immediately intervened to physically block the vehicle and detain the rider, identified as Suman Banik. The injured sergeant was rushed to a local hospital where he received medical treatment for his injuries. Following his arrest, Banik was produced before the Alipore Court and subsequently remanded to police custody. Senior officers confirmed that a criminal case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash driving and obstructing a public servant from discharging their duty, with Lalbazar traffic headquarters issuing strict directives to enforce absolute compliance on the city’s roads.
