An FIR has been registered against several Trinamool Congress councillors and party workers following an “unlawful assembly” outside the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Kolkata. The incident occurred late Thursday evening when a large group of protesters gathered to demonstrate against the alleged “bias” of central agencies and the Election Commission ahead of the upcoming polls. Authorities stated that the gathering violated existing prohibitory orders in the high-security zone, leading to a confrontation with security personnel who were attempting to clear the area.

The police have invoked sections related to rioting, obstructing public servants from discharging their duties, and assembly without prior permission. While the TMC leadership has defended the protest as a democratic right to question the “fairness of the electoral process,” the police report suggests that the mobilization caused significant traffic disruptions and security concerns in the heart of the city. As investigations continue, the CEO’s office has requested additional security deployments to prevent similar flare-ups, while the city’s political atmosphere remains charged with both sides trading accusations of administrative overreach.
