An Indian citizen, Mukesh Kumar Somabhai Choudhary, has been arrested for illegally voting in the 2024 US General Election by falsely claiming to be a US citizen. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) took him into custody following an investigation.

According to court documents, a grand jury in Minnesota indicted Choudhary on September 10. Prosecutors allege that on November 5, 2024, he signed a voter affidavit swearing he was a US citizen, despite not holding citizenship, and subsequently cast a vote.

Choudhary faces charges for providing false information in an election and falsely claiming American citizenship. If convicted, he could be sentenced to a maximum of five years for each charge, totaling up to 10 years in prison. Special Agent Travis Pickard emphasized that voting is a right reserved strictly for US citizens and that the department remains committed to protecting the integrity of the electoral system.

This incident has drawn significant attention, especially as debates regarding voter integrity and the removal of valid voters from electoral rolls continue to make headlines in India.
