Problems are mounting for Punjab Kings cricketer Arshdeep Singh. He has drawn the ire of the Board by regularly posting reels and vlogs on social media. This time, a controversy has erupted over one such reel. Arshdeep faces allegations of making a racist comment directed at a Mumbai Indians cricketer. However, neither Arshdeep nor the BCCI has made any comment on this matter yet.
A video of Arshdeep has gone viral on social media, where he is seen addressing Tilak Varma in Hindi as “Oye Andhere” (Hey darkness) while Varma is walking. In Hindi, the word “Andhera” is generally used to refer to dark-skinned people. Questions are being raised as to why Arshdeep made such a comment targeting a fellow national team cricketer.
Furthermore, Arshdeep repeatedly questions Tilak on whether he uses sunscreen or not. The cricketer’s subsequent comment has added fuel to the controversy. He addresses another Mumbai cricketer sitting in front of him, Naman Dhir, as “Noor”. In Punjabi, fair-skinned people are generally referred to as “Noor”. Various questions have arisen regarding why he addressed the two cricketers using two different linguistic terms.
