In an unprecedented move that has sent shockwaves through the electoral administration, a senior General Observer deployed in West Bengal has been summarily removed from his post following a confrontation with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). The incident occurred during a high-level review meeting in Kolkata to assess the security preparedness for the upcoming phases of the Assembly elections. According to sources present at the meeting, the Observer reportedly interjected during the CEC’s briefing, telling the poll panel chief, “You can’t talk like this,” after a disagreement over the deployment of central forces in sensitive pockets of the city.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) acted swiftly, relieving the official of his duties within hours of the exchange. While the Commission has cited “insubordination” and a “breach of administrative decorum” as the primary reasons for the removal, the incident has sparked a debate over the independence of field observers versus the central authority of the Commission. Opposition parties have been quick to react, suggesting that the official was silenced for raising genuine concerns about ground realities, while the ruling party has maintained that discipline must be upheld within the poll machinery. A replacement observer has already been appointed to ensure that the monitoring process for the crucial Bhabanipur and Kolkata-area booths remains unaffected.
