A major controversy has erupted in the high-profile Bhabanipur constituency following the summary deletion of over 40 percent of Muslim voters from certain polling stations. The deletions were reportedly carried out under the “Adjudication” category by the State Information Registry (SIR), a move that has triggered allegations of targeted disenfranchisement. Local residents and community leaders discovered the mass removals during a final check of the updated electoral rolls, noting that thousands of names—many belonging to families who have resided in the area for generations—were flagged and subsequently purged without individual physical verification.

The Trinamool Congress has reacted with fury, labeling the mass deletions a “conspiracy” to tilt the scales in a seat where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is seeking re-election. Party representatives argued that the “adjudication” process was opaque and disproportionately targeted specific pockets of the minority community under the guise of removing “D-voters” or non-residents. While election officials maintain that the deletions are part of a routine data-cleaning exercise to eliminate duplicate entries and deceased voters, the scale of the removals has prompted urgent appeals to the Election Commission. As tensions rise in the neighborhood, civil society groups are calling for an immediate stay on the revised list and a transparent, house-to-house re-verification to ensure no genuine citizen is denied their right to vote on April 29.
