West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) after the central agency interrogated a Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate and issued fresh summons to two other party members. Speaking at a high-decibel campaign rally, the TMC supremo questioned the timing of the investigative actions, asking, “Were you sleeping so far?” She alleged that the sudden surge in activity just days before the polling phases is a clear indication of “political vendetta” orchestrated by the BJP to harass her candidates and disrupt their election schedules.

Banerjee accused the Union Government of using central agencies as its “frontline soldiers” to intimidate the opposition when they cannot win on the ground. She maintained that the people of Bengal would give a “fitting reply” at the ballot box to what she termed a blatant abuse of power. While the ED maintains that the summons are part of ongoing financial investigations that have reached a critical stage, the TMC has intensified its “agency vs. people” narrative, framing the legal scrutiny as an assault on the state’s democratic process and an attempt to shift the focus away from local development issues.
