TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee Moves ECI Against RG Kar Victim’s Mother Over Derogatory Remarks Against CM
Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and advocate Kalyan Banerjee has formally approached the Election Commission of India (ECI), seeking urgent action against the mother of the RG Kar Medical College victim. The complaint alleges that the mother used “grossly derogatory and unparliamentary language” against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a recent public gathering. According to the TMC, while the party sympathizes with the family’s grief, the specific nature of the comments made during the ongoing election campaign violates the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by inciting personal hatred and targeting the dignity of a woman holding constitutional office.
Kalyan Banerjee argued that the statements were not merely an outpouring of emotion but appeared to be “politically orchestrated” by opposition forces to malign the Chief Minister’s image ahead of the crucial Assembly phases. The TMC has requested the ECI to issue a gag order or a formal warning to prevent the further use of such language in the public domain. On the other hand, opposition leaders and citizen groups have condemned the move, calling it an “insensitive” attempt to silence a grieving parent who is seeking justice for her daughter. The Commission is expected to review the video evidence of the speech before deciding whether the remarks constitute a punishable violation of election laws.
