In a major shock to the Indian boxing world, two-time World Champion Nikhat Zareen has failed to qualify for the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
During the national selection trials held in Patiala, the prominent Indian female boxer suffered an unexpected defeat, leaving her unable to secure a spot for these two major tournaments. The athlete competed in the 51 kg category during the trials in Patiala. However, she was defeated in the semi-finals of the competition.
In the final of that category, Nikhat faced Sakshi Chaudhary and was defeated by a score of 1-4. It is noteworthy that Sakshi had reduced her weight specifically to target the Commonwealth and Asian Games, moving from her previous 54 kg category to compete in the 51 kg national trials this time. By performing exceptionally well in this new weight class, the young boxer pulled off this massive upset.
Along with Nikhat, another Indian female boxer, Nitu Ghanghas, also failed in the trials this time and lost the opportunity to participate in the aforementioned two major tournaments.
