After enduring a prolonged period of intense heat, Kolkata is finally set to receive a major reprieve as meteorologists predict a week-long rainy spell. Weather models indicate that a series of thunderstorms, typical of the pre-monsoon “Kalbaishakhi” pattern, are likely to occur daily across the city and its surrounding districts starting this week. This atmospheric shift is expected to significantly lower the maximum temperatures, bringing them down from the high 40s to a more manageable range, providing much-needed relief from the oppressive humidity.

The regional weather office has issued a yellow alert, warning of gusty winds and frequent lightning strikes during these evening squalls. While the rainfall will help recharge the groundwater and cool the parched streets, authorities have advised residents to take precautions during the peak activity hours. This wet spell is forecasted to persist until the first week of May, marking a definitive end to the severe April heatwave and transitioning the region into a more typical, albeit stormy, early summer climate.
