Kolkata is currently struggling with a grueling “double whammy” of soaring temperatures and oppressive humidity, making outdoor conditions nearly unbearable for residents. The discomfort index has spiked as high moisture levels from the Bay of Bengal combine with the mid-April heat, resulting in a “real-feel” temperature significantly higher than the actual mercury reading. Health experts have advised citizens to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, as the city faces one of its most uncomfortable stretches of the season.

However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon for the surrounding regions. The weather office has issued a Nor’wester (Kalbaishakhi) alert for several adjoining districts in South Bengal. While Kolkata remains trapped in a heat dome for now, neighboring areas could see squalls and thundershowers by late evening. Forecasters are monitoring whether these systems will gain enough momentum to reach the city and provide the much-needed relief from the current heatwave-like conditions.
