He had kept it open. If given a chance, he was ready to break his retirement and play in the World Cup in the national team jersey. However, that hope of Luis Suarez was not fulfilled. Coach Marcelo Bielsa has announced Uruguay’s 26-member squad, excluding the 39-year-old star. Apart from Messi’s friend Suarez, almost all familiar faces have found a place in the squad. Coach Bielsa has sprung a few surprises in the team selection.
In contrast to 12 midfielders, he has kept only three in the forward line. Among the familiar faces included are—Ronald Araújo, José María Giménez, Mathías Olivera, Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, Manuel Ugarte, and Darwin Núñez. Uruguay will begin their World Cup campaign on June 15 with a match against Saudi Arabia. Their next two matches will be against Cape Verde and Spain respectively.
